Until a Natural Predator Emerges, We Eat Lionfish!!

If you have heard of the well-known brand “Zookeeper,” then you know that killing the invasive lionfish species is of utmost importance to them.

Allie Elhage, the creator of the lionfish container, is so
passionate about preserving our reefs from this pesky fish,
he spent countless time and money to create a safe apparatus
for collecting them.

These beautiful creatures are native to the Indo Pacific.

They were never intended to cohabitate in our local waters. They voraciously eat everything in their path which includes our precious game and reef fish. Since their only true predators are scuba divers, Allie understood the need to make this job prevalent and free from harm to collectors. He successfully built the Zookeeper container.

Not only is capturing and killing lionfish a good deed, but they also make a delectable meal!

Here is a recipe Allie came up with incorporating the palatable prey. He has graciously shared it with us here.

Ingredients:

  • 8oz Sashimi grade lionfish fillets: diced in 1/2″ squares.
  • 1/2 Sweet onion diced small
  • 12 cilantro leaves (just the leaves) finely chopped – the finer the better
  • 3 Avocados diced in 1/2″ cubes
  • Juice from 2 limes
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 red onions diced small

Directions:

Mix everything except the cubed lionfish, add salt and pepper to taste and stir.

Add lionfish, and stir.

Place in refrigerator for 45 minutes to chill.

Serve as appetizer on crackers, toasted french baguette or Belgian endives. Enjoy!!!!
